Step 1
Keep an open line of communication with your child. Encourage her to talk to you about any problems she is having at school or with friends. Let her know that you are always there to help her with any problems she is having. By openly communicating with your child, she'll be more comfortable talking to you if someone is pressuring her to do drugs.
-
Step 2
Educate your child about the harmful effects of drugs. Visit websites such as "Just Think Twice." This website gives kids the facts on common drugs such as marijuana and crystal meth as well as commonly abused over the counter drugs like cough medicine. Kids can also learn about what drugs can do to your body by looking at pictures of drug users and by reading the stories of former drug users. The question and answer portion of the website allows teens to get answers about any drug-related questions. The website's hip and colorful layout is designed to appeal to teens.
-
Step 3
Teach your child how to cope with the demands of everyday life without resorting to drugs. Introduce your child to stress relieving hobbies and sports. Enroll your child in activities that enhance his self esteem and provide structure and discipline to his life.
