If you have to replace a bad sprinkler head, you do not need to call an expensive irrigation specialist to do it for you. It is simple and easy to do.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you know which sprinkler head is no good, begin working on it. If you're not sure where the sprinkler is that is not working properly, turn on the system and mark it with a stick or little flag. Once you've done that, you can begin the simple process of replacing it.

  2. Step 2

Turn off the water supply to the irrigation system. Use a shovel and carefully dig around the area where the flag is marking the sprinkler head. Make sure that you do this very carefully so you won't cut the pvc pipe. You can cut the pipe and not know it until you start the system again. Then you'll have to replace the pipe or fix it.

  3. Step 3

Once you've dug around the sprinkler head, you'll notice that it is connected to a plastic, black flex pipe. You may need to dig a little more to have room to work. When you're able to lift the sprinkler head, look underneath it. It is connected to a black connector, which is connected to the flex pipe. All you have to do is unscrew the sprinkler head. It should screw right off by hand. Once you have taken it off, you screw on the new sprinkler head. Place the sprinkler head upright by placing a little bit of dirt around it to keep it straight. Fill in the hole and you are done. Easy, right?
