How to Reverse Liver Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis of the liver is a complication that can arise as a result of liver disease. Diseases that can affect the liver include hepatitis, chronic alcoholism and fatty liver disease. In the earliest stages, the liver can make repairs and the damage caused by the disease can be reversed. However, if the liver cirrhosis becomes progressively worse, the damage may become irreversible as scar tissue starts to build up. Treatment for cirrhosis needs to be done under the care of a physician.

Things You'll Need

  • Doctor's orders
  • Antiviral medications
  • Take any medications recommended by your physician. If you have hepatitis, you'll likely be given anti-viral medications to help your body fight off the infection caused by the disease as well as build up healthy liver cells to replace the damaged ones.

  • Avoid any type of alcohol. In order to help the liver reverse any damage caused by the cirrhosis, you should avoid alcohol.

  • Adjust your diet. To help your liver cirrhosis, a doctor may recommend decreasing your salt intake. Instead of adding extra salt to your meals, use fresh herbs instead. Raw shellfish will need to be avoided since it puts you at risk for an infection when you suffer from cirrhosis of the liver.

  • Go through hemodialysis treatment. If you are unable to get rid of waste due to the liver cirrhosis, hemodialysis treatment involves cleaning waste from the blood in the body.

  • Find out if you are a candidate for a liver transplant. If major damage has occurred in your liver, a transplant may be your only option to reverse the condition. During the transplant, either your entire or part of your liver will be replaced with a donor liver.
