How to Plant Potato Seeds
Growing potatoes from seeds is a fairly easy process. The seed itself is actually a type of potato known as a seed potato. Seed potatoes can be purchased from gardening catalogs or greenhouses. It is important to purchase only certified seed potatoes, as these are free of disease and parasites. The process of growing potatoes must be planned out to achieve the best yield. Put the seed potatoes in your box, root end down. Leave them for a week or two at room temperature, making sure they get a lot of light.

Cut the potato into small squares after it has sprouted "eyes." Each cut should contain at least one "eye" (also known as a sprout). Set aside overnight.

Dig holes in your garden. Wear gloves, and use your trowel to dig. The holes should be placed 15 inches apart; rows should be 4 feet apart.

Place a potato seed inside each hole and cover it with dirt.

Add fertilizer to the top of the soil.

Water your potatoes. Continue to water every morning. You can stop watering after the potato seeds have created a plant, flowered and then died back.

Loosen the soil around the plant when you are ready to harvest your potatoes. Digging with your fingers will help break up the dirt.

Remove the potatoes from the soil underneath the plant by simply lifting them out.

You can begin planting your potato seeds in spring once the ground has softened.
Do not plant a new crop of potatoes in the same place you planted them before. Potatoes can attract parasites, so plant in different areas each season.
