If you're plagued by the stench of smoke in your home, here are some simple tips that can really help get that smell out once and for all!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vinegar
  • Citrus Fruits
  • Rags
  • Stiff Brush
  1. Step 1

First thing you'll want to do is to completely clean the walls of your home. Use a mixture of hot water and vinegar with some citrus in it to help with the smell and grim. If your water starts to get to dirty, dump out the dirty water and refill it.

  2. Step 2

Clean the carpets. a vacuum is great for getting rid of some of the smell, but to really get into it you need to have a carpet cleaner. If you don't have one, or yours isn't heavy duty, than you can rent one from places such as Home Depot or Menards.

  3. Step 3

If you have any furniture that was in the smoking house, you'll have to wipe it down or if it's a fabric you'll want to clean it with the attachment the carpet cleaner comes with. Test your furniture first before doing all of it, you don't want to find out the cleaner messes up your furniture's color

  4. Step 4

Clean your windows and blinds! Most people completely forget about these or just don't want to deal with them but they hold a lot of that smoke just like the walls! Use the vinegar and citrus on both of these and finish the windows up with some window cleaner to make sure not to have any streaks.

  5. Step 5

Exhaust fans can keep a lot of that smoke smell so make sure you take apart your bathroom exhaust fan and if you have one in your kitchen to do the same there. The kitchen fan will be a bit harder to clean since it's been dealing with grease along with smoke so really scrub it out while you're dealing with it.

  6. Step 6

Check your bathroom tile grout. Even though this can be pretty hard to clean and maybe not even help that much, it will brighten up your bathroom and at least help with your fight against the smoke. Use a stiff brush and the Vinegar solution to clean it, it takes some elbow grease.

  7. Step 7

Lastly, the AC. Replace the filter! The filter is going to keep that smoke smell and then every time you use your AC it's going to pump that smell right back into your home.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can, save the carpet cleaning for last. Not because it makes a difference but because the smell of the cleaner is going to mask the smoke smell and deter you from finishing the job.
  • This is not a one hour project! It takes time and elbow grease, and the smoke smell wont let up right away.
