If you are traveling on business or vacation, you may need to find a wireless hotspot to connect to the internet. Many hotels provide one, but some don't or they charge to use their connection. Knowing ahead of time where nearby hotspots are located can save you time and money when you are in an unfamiliar location. Here is How To Find A Free Wi-Fi Hotspot.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Device with wireless internet capabilities
  1. Step 1

A good place to start your search for Free Wi-Fi Hotspots is at www.wififreespot.com. This website lists known hotspots on their state-by-state list. Check the list for the state you are in or going to, and it will give you a listing of all the cities in that state with free Wi-Fi.

This site also has special lists for airports, as many airports have Wi-Fi, but it isn't always provided free.

They also have a list of companies like Panera Bread restaurants and Barnes & Noble book stores that have public access Wi-Fi. They list several other available retailers, and even list some Greyhound Bus Line routes that offer free Wi-Fi on the bus!

This website lists free Wi-Fi hotspots in several foreign countries, too.

  2. Step 2

If you have an iPhone, you can download JiWire’s Wi-Fi Finder application from iTunes. This app gives you access to the world’s largest verified registry of hotspot locations on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The hotspots that you can locate with this app are not all free, but many are, and you can even submit wireless internet hotspots that you locate so they can be added to JiWire's registry.

  3. Step 3

Another good site to locate hotspots is www.wi-fihotspotlist.com. This site lets you locate hotspots within a 1-10 mile range of a given address. You can also check on several foreign countries for available hotspots. The results you get will include some free and some pay-for-service sites.

  4. Step 4

JiWire.com has the world's largest registry of free and pay Wi-Fi hotspots covering 140 countries. This is a very comprehensive website that offers lots of locations for you to choose from.

  5. Step 5

www.openwifispots.com lists only free Wi-Fi hotspots on their website. You simply enter any address and click on "Search" to get a listing of free wireless locations. The results will list each local hotspot plus show you the location on a Google map. You can even submit a wireless internet hotspot that you know of and they will add it to their registry for others to see.

  6. Step 6

www.wefi.com is a Wi-Fi hotspot locator that will also automatically connect you to any hotspot you locate within your vicinity. You simply download the free application to your computer, and when it finds an acceptable hotspot, you can click on it and be instantly connected. These hotspots will be a mixture of free and pay hotspots.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are planning to travel to a different city and stay at a hotel, research available hotspots ahead of time. If possible, book your stay at a hotel that offers free Wi-Fi or that is near a free hotspot.
