If someone near you begins to have a convulsive seizure you need to know how to react and take care of them until medical help arrives.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Calm and control of the situation.
  1. Step 1

First let's dispel a myth. Do not put anything into the mouth of someone having a seizure. It can damage their teeth or they may swallow and choke on any broken pieces of the item or teeth.
You must keep the air way clear.

  2. Step 2

Turn the person on their side with the under leg in a backward bent position for comfort and balance.
Place the arm against the floor next to the body and the other arm in front of the body pointing away.
This position, if maintained will help to keep the air way open.
    Loosen collars for easier breathing.

  3. Step 3

Move objections away from the persons body. Items such as chairs, table, etc. can cause harm to the patient if the seizure causes them to hit the item.
Use calm to control the situation and give instructions to others if they are in the area.

  4. Step 4

Do not try to restrain the patient. This can cause harm to you and them. Time the seizure while using gentle touches to their back and shoulders for positioning.
Once the seizure has passed the person may sleep or they may be very confused.
Use a gentle voice and tell them they just had a seizure and medical help is on the way.
At this point treat any injuries that may have occurred during the seizure such as cuts or head injuries. Stop any bleeding and keep patient calm.

  5. Step 5

Stay with the person until help arrives and give all the information you can to medical personnel.
If you are the first one to deal with the person having a convulsive seizure it is your job to keep the person safe from harm, calm, breathing and remember information.
It may not seem like much, but it very important to their future treatment.
