How to Buy The Best Home Desktop Computer
There are many advantages to owning a desktop computer, but selecting the most suitable system can be a challenge. Several models may seem similar at first glance, there are numerous differences that can impact what you want to accomplish. Narrow your selection based on factors such as hardware design, component selection and bundled peripherals.

1
Select a computer with a sturdy case that allows for easy expansion. At minimum, the case should have internal bays for extra hard drives in case you want to expand the storage capacity. The motherboard also determines how you can expand the computer; if it has empty RAM slots, you can expand the memory without removing the memory already included. A second video card slot allows you to use multiple video cards simultaneously for improved gaming performance. A sturdy case isolates vibration and minimizes the computer's noise level.

Narrow your search to a computer with a dedicated nVidia or ATI video card. Integrated video chips, common in low-cost computers, utilize a portion of the system memory. This takes away a portion of the memory that Windows applications should be using. Integrated video also performs poorly with 3D games.

Focus on computer systems that include a monitor. If you want a large display for your desktop, you may be able to save money by bundling the monitor with the computer rather than purchasing each item separately. The same is true of other peripherals such as a keyboard, a mouse, speakers and a printer; unless you prefer a peripheral made by a particular company, bundle other devices with your computer if possible.

Select either the Windows or Mac operating systems. While most desktop computers run Windows, Apple has some interesting choices with the Mac Mini, the all-in-one iMac and the workstation-class Mac Pro. The iMac is worth considering if you want a monitor with your computer, because its components are built into the monitor's casing. Purchasing a Windows computer offers a wide range of software that will run on your new machine.
