On October 22, 2009, Windows 7 will become Microsoft's flagship operating system (OS). Microsoft has made Windows 7 the most energy-efficient OS to date. There are a plethora of features in Windows 7 that will save you money on electricity. One new feature is Windows 7's ability to create an energy report that helps you identify issues that cause a poor energy efficiency rating on your computer.

Instructions

      The Start orb.

      Click the "Start" orb and type "cmd" without the quotes in the instant search field.

      Run as administrator.

      Right-click on "cmd" and select "Run as administrator." User Account Control (UAC) will appear and ask you if you want to allow changes to your computer. Choose "Yes."

      Running your energy report for 60 seconds.

      Type "powercfg /energy" with the quotes in the command window. A message appears indicating that your computer will be traced for 60 seconds, and the behavior will be observed.

      Read your energy report for better computer efficiency.

      View your report. Windows 7 displays your report in the following path:"c:\windows\system32\energy-report.html". To view it, open Internet Explorer and select the "Alt" key and then "File | Open" and browse to the path indicated above.

  • Please read your energy report closely, as it will help you make your computer more energy efficient. A more energy-efficient computer will save you money.

  • Do not run this report on a laptop that is not directly plugged into a socket. If you do, the report will not be accurate.
