How to Compare DSL Modems
A digital subscriber line (DSL) modem allows your computer to upload and download data through an Internet service provider. Not all DSL modems are created equal, however; there are many different brands and models available that have differing options. Before choosing a DSL modem, take careful consideration of the different features available to make sure you find the modem that best fits the needs of your home or office network.

1
Take stock of how much room is available on your desk to place the modem. Choose a smaller modem if you don't have much desk space, such as the "3Com 80-003615-00," which is less than 5 inches long.
-
2
Consider if you plan on switching to a cable service or upgrading to a T-1 line in the future. Choose a modem that can interface with a DSL, cable or T-1 line such as "ADC Kentrox 51-3W" if you want to upgrade your network later on.

3
Decide if you want any extra features beyond simply web surfing. Go with a DSL modem such as the "Actiontec GT701C" if you want to be able to save voice mails through your Internet connection directly to your computer's hard drive.
-
4
Pick a more expensive DSL modem that has higher upload and download speeds if you want a faster surfing experience. Pick a DSL modem such as the "3Com HomeConnect 3CP3647" for a download speed of 8 megabytes per second.
-
5
Check the warranty provided through the DSL modem's manufacturer. Pick a modem with a two-year replacement warranty, such as "ZyXEL P870M-I1", if you are worried about mechanical failures or power surges.
-
6
Pick a dual-purpose DSL modem if you want to set up a network in your home. Go with a model such as the "Actiontec GT724R", which includes the functionality of an Ethernet router along with its modem capabilities.

Tips & Warnings
Your maximum upload and download speed are determined by your Internet provider. Don't buy a higher-priced modem with 8 megabyte download speeds if your Internet service provider only offers 3 megabyte download speeds.
Read through the system requirements of the DSL modem before making a purchase. While the "Motorola 1431182" DSL modem is compatible with a Mac computer, many others are not.
