Instructions

  1. Christmas Wheelbarrow

    • 1

Get an old wooden or metal garden wheelbarrow from a second-hand shop. If you like, you can paint it a bright red with green trim, or leave it looking rustic if you prefer.

    • 2

Place the wheelbarrow in a prominent spot on your property.

    • 3

Line the inside of the wheelbarrow with cuttings of evergreen branches. Allow them to hang over the sides.

    • 4

Get some poinsettia plants. Put them into decorative flower pots, or wrap the pots with pretty foil paper and a bow. Place one inside of the wheelbarrow and a couple around the base.

    • 5

Arrange some decorations inside of the wheelbarrow. Use your imagination and see what you can find in the attic or thrift shops. Some ideas are Christmas figures or dolls, plastic citrus fruits, pine cones, boxes wrapped like presents, or stockings stuffed with newspaper and a few toys peeking out of the top.

    Christmas Ball Topiary

    • 6

Get a cone-shaped tomato cage from a gardening center. Stand it upside-down so it is resting on the wider base.

    • 7

Take some floral wire and twist the end around the base to secure it. Begin winding the wire around the cage. It doesn't have to be neat because the wire won't show on the finished product. Just use the wire to create a web-like weave so that the ornaments have something to hold onto. When you are satisfied with the weave, snip the wire and twist the end around the cage to secure it.

    • 8

Get a couple of large packages of plain glass or plastic colorful Christmas ball ornaments. Tie a long twist-tie to end where the hook would go.

    • 9

Make clusters of balls by holding them together like a bouquet and twisting the ends of their twist-ties together.

    • 10

Take the clusters and twist them around the wire on the tomato cage to secure them. Start at the bottom, going all the way around. Work your way up the entire cage. Place the clusters close together so that the cage cannot be seen through the clusters. Top your topiary with a Christmas tree topper.

    Luminaries

    • 11

Collect some empty tin cans, such as soup or vegetable cans. Clean them well. Fill them with water, and place them in the freezer until they are solid.

    • 12

Trace your favorite Christmas cookie cutters onto paper. Use simple shapes such as a star, candy cane or Christmas tree. Cut the shapes out.

    • 13

Lay a towel onto your table and lay a can on top of it. Place a cut-out on the can and trace around it with a Sharpie marker.

    • 14

Use a hammer and a nail to poke holes along the traced line, about 1/4-inch apart, all the way around the shape.

    • 15

Empty and dry the can. Line steps or paths with the luminaries. Place a few pebbles, sand, salt or dirt at the bottom of the can to help stabilize it. Put a tea candle inside and light it at night.
