How to Clear Scars Caused by Acne

Acne is a common disease that causes pimples anywhere on the skin. Pimples form when the hair follicles under the skin become clogged with sebum (an oily substance that makes skin and hair waterproof), dead cells and bacteria. Pimples commonly appear on the neck, face, chest, back and shoulders. This skin condition can affect anyone, but is more common in adolescents. Acne scars are the visible remnants of the skin damage caused by the immune system's attempt to get rid of the bacteria. When left untreated, acne scars can darken over time, causing unsightly skin discolorations. Fortunately, you can reduce the scars caused by acne.

Instructions

Exfoliate the affected areas with an exfoliating cream. Skin exfoliation removes the dead layer of skin cells from the surface of your skin which, gradually, can diminish acne scars. When buying an exfoliating kit look for the ingredient alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) complex. This potent ingredient can help tone dark patches, blemishes or scars left by acne. Follow directions on the package. There are numerous exfoliating creams you can select from at all leading drugstores.

Apply a milk and oatmeal mixture to the affected areas. Oatmeal is rich in antioxidants and is a natural skin exfoliant. Mix one cup of milk and one cup of uncooked oatmeal in a bowl. Apply the mixture to the scarred areas and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse well with lukewarm water. Do this once a day to help clear acne scars.

    • 3

Purchase and apply an over-the-counter bleaching cream. Most bleaching creams contain the ingredient hydroquinone which lightens the skin. Apply the cream to the affected area twice daily, once in the morning and before going to bed. Do this every day. These creams are available at all leading drugstores; the pharmacist can recommend a bleaching cream appropriate for your skin.

Rub aloe vera gel on the scars. Aloe vera contains a compound called mucilaginous polysaccharide (MPS), which may soften and lighten the acne scar. Gently rub the gel directly on the scar before going to bed and leave it on overnight. Find aloe vera gel at health food stores.

Apply sunscreen. You must apply sun block to the scars before going outside when doing the above treatments to prevent discoloration. Purchase sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 35 or above.
