As many careers as there are, you can also make a career at helping people make their own careers. Being a career coach can be a very rewarding experience as you reach your goals and potential by helping people meet theirs.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Human resource trade publications
  1. Step 1

Study the field. To successfully direct people through the job market, know what the market wants. Meet with human resources representatives to find out what they look for in new hires and what they can do for established employees. Understand what makes an employee valuable to a company so that you can tell your clients what to do.

You should also keep up with trends in hiring, resumes and cover letter writing. You can find much of this kind of information online and library research, plus regular interviews and meetings with HR professionals will help you stay ahead of the curve and provide your clients with excellent service.

  2. Step 2

Advertise your services to find clients. There are many ways to let job hunters and employees know you are available to help them with their careers. A website is always a helpful tool, though as you are building your business, you may find it more helpful to meet people face-to-face. That way, they can get to know the person behind the product and develop a stronger connection to you and your work.

You should develop and have marketing materials readily available. Business cards, postcards and flyers will help spread the word about your services.

  3. Step 3

Develop a consulting plan. As you get to know your clients, determine if it is best for you to meet with them in person at regular intervals, or if it is better for both of you to use email or phone calls to communicate. Based on location and time, each client may be different. However, each client should have their own, individualized plan.

Take time to get to know each client and develop specific goals, strategies and a schedule for each one. Then make sure you stay in regular contact to make sure they are hitting those marks.

Also make sure that you take note of what is working and what is not. If your client is seeing success, then keep doing what you are doing. If they are having trouble, or not moving along at the pace you had hoped or planned, then it may be time to retool your efforts and develop a new plan.

  4. Step 4

Ask for referrals. The absolute best way to let others know about your services is through a personal referral. As you begin having success with clients, let them know you are able to take on more business and ask them if they would refer you to others looking to analyze their careers.
