The desktop background in Windows is a way to show an image or display a personal picture on the desktop. When a computer is purchased, most manufacturers leave the default background; other manufacturers create a customized background. These can be changed to an image you saved on the hard drive or another Windows theme.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties." This step opens a configuration window for the desktop. In this window, the user can change background colors and images, resolution settings and monitor installations.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Desktop" tab at the top of the configuration screen. This gives you the option to select an image or Windows custom background.

  3. Step 3

Select an image from the list labeled "Background" at the bottom of the configuration window. You can also click the "Browse" button to select an image saved on the hard drive.

  4. Step 4

Click the "Ok" button. When the configuration window closes, the desktop automatically enables the new background.
