A keyboard is a necessary device to control a computer. Although a mouse is optional (albeit a difficult task using Windows), a keyboard is necessary for typing commands. Most computers come with a keyboard, but if you buy a new keyboard, verify the connector before plugging it into the computer because keyboards have two types of connections.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the keyboard packaging and examine what type of connector is on the wire. A round connection is a PS2 connector. A flat, rectangular connector is USB. Some keyboards come with both connectors.

  2. Step 2

Look on the back of the computer for the right connection. Most computers come with USB ports and a PS2 port. However, older machines may not have a USB port. If your computer does not have a USB port and the keyboard requires it, you may need to purchase an adapter. For most computers, however, a USB port is available.

  3. Step 3

Connect the keyboard wire to the connection on the computer. If the connection is USB, the computer will automatically detect it. If the connection is PS2, the computer may not recognize the device without a reboot.

  4. Step 4

Reboot the computer. This step isn't necessary for a USB device, but for PS2, the computer needs to be reboot for the drivers to install.

  5. Step 5

Install device drivers. If the keyboard comes with any extra functions like media controls or gaming buttons, device drivers may need to be installed. Insert the CD-ROM that is packaged with the keyboard and follow the manufacturer's instructions in the installation wizard.
