How to Work at a Post Office

The post office is one of the largest government employers in the United States. You must fill out extra forms and complete additional requirements when applying for a postal position than you would when applying for a civilian job. Once you complete the necessary requirements, then you can apply to work for the U.S. Postal Service.

      Apply for a postal job either in person at the post office or at the USPS employment website (usps.com). Set a time for when you can take an entrance exam.

      Take the entrance exam. The test covers standard questions relating to the post office, such as state abbreviations and zip codes.

      Pass the entrance exam as well as the physical requirements. You must be able to lift at least 70 pounds in a sack. Your eyesight and hearing are also tested. You must have at least 20/40 vision in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye.

      Take and pass a drug screening. You must be drug free to work for the post office. If you pass the drug test, you will be notified of an interview date.

      Interview with the U.S. Postal Service. You will be notified via phone if you are accepted for a position.
