The annual U.S. apple crop is about 200 million bushels, enough for each American to have 100 apples. About 40 percent of the apple crop is processed for foods such as juice, cider and applesauce. One way to enjoy a fresh apple is to bake it. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Gala or Rome apples
  • Sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Raisins
  • Butter
  • Baking dish

Instructions

      Core a Gala or Rome apple leaving about 1/4 inch at the bottom of the apple.

      Mix 1/2 tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of brown sugar with 1/4 teaspoon each of cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl. Add a handful of raisins.

      Place apple on a baking sheet with a little water to cover the bottom.

      Spoon the sugar and brown sugar mixture into the hole of the apple and place a pat of butter on top.

      Bake at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
