As American as hot dogs, Chevrolet, and of course -- apple pies... Surveys say, the most popular pie in the U. S. of A. is the apple pie.

Yes, fresh apple pie is absolutely scrumptious, but there are some amazing variation on the number one dessert pie in the country.

This article will provide the best apple pie recipes for All-American basic apple pie that will please any taste bud. But it will also allow you to explore other apple pies -- Apple-cheese, Canned apple, Dutch apple, French apple and Green apple.

These best apple pie recipes will be the hit of any meal or party!

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic Apple Pie 8-inch
  • Pastry for 8 inch two-crust pie crust (see link below)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Dash of salt
  • 5 cups thinly sliced pared tart apples (about 5 medium)
  • 1 Tablespoon margarine or butter
  • ....................
  • Basic Apple Pie 9-inch
  • Pastry for 9 inch two-crust pie crust (see link below)
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Dash of salt
  • 6 cups thinly sliced pared tart apples (about 6 medium)
  • 2 Tablespoons margarine or butter
  1. Step 1

    Heat your oven to 425 degrees. Prepare pastry (see link below). Mix in sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Stir in apples. Turn into a pastry-lined pie plate; dot with butter. Cover with top curst that has slits cut in it; seal and flute (all explained in pastry crust link below).

    Cover the edge with a 3-inch strip of aluminum foil; remove the foil during the last 15 minutes of baking. Bake until the crust is brown and the juice begins to bubble through the slits in the crust (about 40 to 50 minutes)

  2. Step 2

    Apple-Cheese Pie

    Prepare 9-inch pie as directed except - pour half of the apple mixture into the pastry-lined pie plate; cover with 5 slices of processed American cheese and top with remaining apples.

  3. Step 3

    Canned Apple Pie

    Prepare 9-inch pie as directed except - substitute 2 can (20 ounces each) of pie-sliced apples, drained, for the fresh apples.

  4. Step 4

    Dutch Apple Pie

    Prepare 9-inch pie as directed except- make extra large slits in the top of the crust; 5 minutes before the end of baking, pour a 1/2 cup of whipping cream through the slits in the top crust. This pie is best served warm.

  5. Step 5

    French Apple Pie

    Prepare pastry for a 9-inch One-Crust pie (see the link below for pie crust pastry). Omit the butter and top apple fill with a crumb topping.

    To prepare the crumb topping, mix 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup of firm butter (or margarine) and 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar until crumbly. Bake 50 minutes. Cover the topping with aluminum foil during the last 10 minutes of baking. This pie is best served warm.

  6. Step 6

    Green Apple Pie

    Prepare the pie as directed except- increase the sugar to 1/2 of a cup and use green apples.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are using self-rising flour, omit the salt.
  • The best apple pie recipes start with a good apple - tart, firm, juicy apples.
  • Excellent apples to use for pies are Cortland, Rhode Island, Greening, McIntosh and Yellow Transparent.
  • Good apples to use are Golden Delicious, Jersey Red, Jonathan, Lodi, Rome Beauty and Starr.
  • One pound of apples is approximately 3 medium apples or 3 cups of slices apples.
