Don't be afraid to try new angles for your furniture.

The living room is the most important room in your home. It is where everyone gathers to spend time together. Decorating the living room can be fun, and you can do it on a limited budget. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean and declutter the living room before you attempt any decorating. Less is better. Remove all unwanted boxes, knick knacks and other items that don't belong in this space. Clean the windows, flooring, furniture and walls.

    • 2

Rearrange the furniture. Don't be afraid to experiment with the furniture. Take the couch away from the wall; move the TV around. Angle the furniture in the room. Don't assume things won't work; try them out.

    • 3

If your furniture is not in a good condition, paint it or use slipcovers on it. You can buy slipcovers at stores for low prices or you can toss an attractive throw over the back of a drab cushion. Improve your furniture with throw pillows, which are inexpensive and easy to make.

    • 4

Buy an inexpensive area rug for the living room. Don't be afraid to experiment with the colors. Not every color has to match; just don't overpower the other items in the room.

    • 5

Apply a fresh coat of paint to the entire room or paint one wall in an accent color. Shop at your local hardware store for clearance paints. You may also ask friends and family if they may have any paint left over from a project. If you like darker colors, use the color only on an accent wall. If the entire room is dark, it will appear small.

    • 6

Add wall art, pictures and accessories in your living room. You may already have these items in your home or attic. If you need more, shop yard sales. Some items may need to be fixed but be creative.

    • 7

Plants make any room more inviting. Real plants are the best to bring an outside feel inside the room. If you do not have a green thumb, find attractive, low-priced fake plants. You want to give the appearance that they are real, so shop around for the perfect plants.
