Lobelia, sometimes known as Indian tobacco, is an annual flower which blooms in the summer and fall months. It grows six to eight inches tall and produces small, colorful blossoms in red, white, blue and violet. Lobelia is commonly used for edging in gardens because it is not invasive or aggressive. Lobelia is easy to grow, but requires special care when starting or the seeds will not germinate.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small planters
  • Gardening soil
  • Balanced fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Sow lobelia seeds in a small planter filled with garden soil about 10 to 12 weeks before the final frost of spring. Do not cover the seeds with soil; light helps them germinate and sprout. Keep the soil moist by bottom watering.

  2. Step 2

Choose a location to plant the lobelia that receives about six hours of sunlight each day, preferably with some afternoon shade. Wait until the final frost of the year. Dig a hole large enough to hold the roots of the plant without bending.

  3. Step 3

Place the lobelia plant directly into the hole and refill with soil. Water the plant immediately to collapse any air pockets and compact the soil. Plant other lobelia plants a minimum of six inches away.

  4. Step 4

Water two to three times per week, or often enough to keep the soil moist at all times. Apply about one inch of water to ensure the soil is moistened thoroughly. Reduce watering during the winter to once per week to reduce the chance of freezing damage.

  5. Step 5

Feed lobelia once per year using a balanced 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's directions for proper application. Apply in early spring to encourage the growth of flowers throughout the growing season.

Tips & Warnings
  • To bottom water a plant, place a small saucer under the plant's container with holes. The soil draws the water up through the holes, and the plant is able to absorb the moisture. Lobelia plants can be grown in pots their entire lives, but will require fertilizing once every two weeks with an all-purpose plant fertilizer. Slow-release, liquid or granulated fertilizer can be used. Lobelia can be bought already started and planted directly after purchasing.
