    • 1

Make an appointment with your OB-GYN doctor or with a Planned Parenthood clinic.

    • 2

Consult with your doctor or the clinic about which type of birth-control pill is right for you. Different options include birth-control methods that will reduce the number of periods you have per year to four and pills that vary in dosage amounts.

Start taking your pill when your doctor has advised you to do so. Typically, it is started the first Sunday after your period ends.

    • 5

Take your pill at the same time each day to ensure it is most effective.

    • 6

Follow up with your doctor should any complications occur with your birth-control pill. Also be sure to go for your regular annual check-up and exam.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you decide to try and get pregnant, you can simply stop taking the pill and your period and ovulation cycle should return to normal within one-three months, but may take longer.

  • Do not take the pill if you smoke, have diabetes or blood disorders or are pregnant. These conditions may have harsh reactions on your body and can lead to a stroke or serious illness.
