How to Make WiFi Pigtails With RJ45 Connectors

A WiFi pigtail is a short patch cord with a connector on each end. It's typically used to connect two WiFi devices that are located next to each other. An RJ45 connector is a specific type of 8-pin 8-contact (8P8C) connector that's frequently used to connect WiFi devices. The cable for a WiFi pigtail consists of eight insulated wires surrounded by an outer protective jacket.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of cable with the desired length using the cable stripper. Ensure that you cut the ends of the cable cleanly at a right angle.

    • 2

Strip a half inch of the outer jacket from the cable with the stripper without damaging the inner wires. Identify the wires using the color scheme of each insulator. The pin 1 wire will typically be white with orange stripes, but may also be white with a green stripe, depending on the specific type of cable. The pin 8 wire will be solid brown or brown with white stripes.

    • 3

Position the cable so that the cut end is facing you with the pin 1 wire on your left and the pin 8 wire on your right. Orient the RJ45 connector so that the end that will plug into the WiFi device is facing you and the securing clip is on top. Insert the eight wires all the way into their designated channel.

    • 4

Place the RJ45 connector into the socket of the crimping tool and make sure that you seat the connector properly in the socket. Squeeze the handles of the crimp tool with just enough force to make the connector pierce the insulation and make electrical contact with the wires. Be sure that you don't damage the connector by squeezing the crimp tool too hard.

Repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 for the other end of the WiFi pigtail.
