How to Sew a Waitress Apron

An apron is an essential part of the waitress uniform, and solid, well-constructed aprons are invaluable. They take hard use, with the pockets being constantly stretched, the seams pulled and spills and stains a fact of life. Pick a coordinating fabric for your uniform and construct a new apron, or make a collection for the entire staff of a restaurant.

Things You'll Need

  • One yard polyester fabric like twill or sateen
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Needle and thread or sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3-inch strip of fabric the entire width of the yardage. This will be the apron tie. With the remaining piece, measure 24 inches from one selvage toward the center of the piece, and cut the entire remaining length of the fabric at this point, creating a piece 24 inches wide and 33 inches tall. The other piece is waste.

    • 2

Cut the selvage from the large piece. Fold the bottom edge up a quarter inch and sew, fold another a quarter inch and sew again. This creates the pocket-top edge. Bring this hemmed edge up until the edge is 8 inches from the bottom. Tack at the corners to hold this pocket in place.

    • 3

With the pocket in front, fold back side seams a quarter inch and sew; fold another quarter inch and sew again. This hems the side seams and catches the pocket sides to secure them. Lay the piece flat with the pocket in front at the bottom. Measure in 1 inch from the right hem, and place a pin to mark. Sew from the bottom of the pocket to the pocket hem at this mark. Divide the remaining pocket into three sections and sew from the bottom to the pocket hem at these dividing points, creating separate pockets in each area.

    • 4

Sew a quarter-inch hem on both short ends of the apron tie. Fold both long edges in a half inch and press to hold. Fold the piece in half lengthwise, touching folded edge to folded edge and press. Open tie and lay flat, measuring to find the center of the strip. Measure to find the center of the apron body, and pin these two points together, with the top of the apron piece lining up with the center fold in the tie strip. Pin carefully the entire width of the apron onto the tie strip. Fold the remaining half of the strip down over the apron top edge, enclosing it in the fold. Sew along the entire edge with the two folds, catching and securing the entire apron inside. Slip stitch the ends of the tie closed.
