If your child has had enough of witches, ghosts and goblins, offer her an alternative this Halloween. A candy corn costume is a sweet departure from the norm. Sewing is entirely optional, and the costume can easily be constructed in an evening out of felt and a few other basic materials. Candy corn costumes are especially appropriate for young children and toddlers.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Poster board
- Hot glue gun
- Large piece of yellow felt
- Large piece of orange felt
- White felt
- 1 yard white ribbon
Measure your child to determine how tall the candy corn should be, and how wide it should be at the widest part, the bottom of the candy corn. Use the measurements and draw a large triangle on a piece of poster board. This will be the template for the candy corn costume. Depending on the size of the child, you may need to tape a couple pieces of posterboard together. Round the corners of the triangle to create a candy corn shape.
Cut the poster board candy corn template into three equal pieces. Trace the bottom third of the candy corn on a large piece of yellow felt. Depending on the size of the child and the size of the felt, you may need to glue two pieces of felt together. This will be the front of the costume. Repeat the step with more yellow felt for the back.
Lay the middle third of the candy corn template on the orange felt, trace it and cut two pieces for the front and back of the candy corn costume. Repeat this step for the top third of the candy corn, using the top template and white felt.
Use a hot glue gun to connect the bottom, middle and top felt sections, creating the front of the candy corn. Repeat to create the back of the candy corn.
Put the front and back of the candy corn together. Starting at the bottom of the candy corn, glue the side seams together, stopping about two-thirds of the way up. Leave the top third open for the arms and head. The sections can be sewed together, if you prefer.
Cut a long piece of white ribbon into four equal pieces. Glue a piece of ribbon to the front and back of the left shoulder and the front and back of the right shoulder. These will be tied in bows to join the front and back of the costume at the shoulder.
Wear the candy corn costume over orange, yellow, black or white leggings and a matching turtleneck top. Add a white hat to complete the look.
Tips & Warnings
- If you're unsure about the size of the costume, make a "pretend" costume out of newspaper, using the template as directed above. Tape the newspaper candy corn front and back together and try it on your child. Adjust the template, as necessary.
- If you're making a larger candy corn costume, felt is available not only in small and large squares, but also by the yard.
