Things You'll Need:

  • Basic Hand tools (sockets, wrenches, etc)
  • Knowledge! Shop manuals, repair guides, internet forums.
  • Patience! Take your time, do it right the first time.
  1. Step 1

Keep all fluids fresh and full! Keep in mind that a classic Corvette averages from 25 to over 50 years old! Engine oil is obvious, but what about suspension lubrication, radiator coolant, transmission fluid, differential lubricant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and even steering gear lubricant? All of these items lose effectiveness over the years, and changing fluids and filters are first tasks at hand.

  2. Step 2

Tune it up! Aging ignition system components and deteriorationg hoses can put a quick stop to your classic machine. Make sure to change spark plugs and wires at regular intervals, as well as studying all hoses for decay/swelling. Additionally, air, fuel, and transmission filters all need to be changed regularly. Finally, keeping the engine bay area clean with a good degreasing solution will stop grime buildup and keep the engine bay sparkling.

  3. Step 3

Preserve that stock interior! Clean all surfaces using a mild solution and then apply a leather and vinyl protectant. Scrub the carpets, or at the very least, keep them vacuumed. Use a quality glass cleaner on the window glass, inside and out!

  4. Step 4

Put some shine into the exterior! Oftentimes, these cars have the original paint job, or touch-up areas. The best way to brighten things up is to hand or wheel buff the entire exterior with a mild buffing/polishing compound, followed by a good wax of any variety.

  5. Step 5

Drive and enjoy your Corvette regularly! Age and non-use will send any car to the auto graveyard quickly. Regular driving assures that all moving parts receive a bath of lubrication and also ensures that everything keeps flowing through the miles of gas, brake, and other lines. Its important to drive the car at least once every few weeks, and bring it up to operating temperature, even when in storage!

  6. Step 6

That's it ! You will enjoy the benefits of good maintenance through sparkling looks, hot sounds, and reliable operation. Make sure to stay on top of all these important details, and when (or if) the day comes to sell, chances are you will more than refund your original purchase price!
