Selling items on Craigslist is easy, fun, and a great way to get rid of your stuff and make extra money. Craigslist.org connects local sellers and buyers, so you can make money with the extra junk you have lying around your house. Craigslist is locally based so its the easiest way to sell - no shipping or credit cards necessary. Follow these instructions to list and sell your items on Craigslist and make extra money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • items to sell
  • internet connection
  • digital camera
  1. Step 1

Collect the items you wish to sell to make money on Craigslist. Make sure the items are clean, working, and in good condition. If you're selling extra clothes, wash and iron them. If you're selling extra electronics, make sure you have the chargers, user guides, and startup disks. It's important to sell items in their best condition in order to increase the value of the items, sell them at a higher price, and ultimately make more money.

  2. Step 2
    Photograph Extra Junk for Sale

Photograph the items you want to sell for extra money on Craigslist. Make sure the pictures are clear, and show the items for sale in the condition they will be sold. In my experience, it's better to include an actual photo of your item, rather than a photo of the item found online.

  3. Step 3
    Craigslist Postings

Visit Craigslist.org and select your city. Then select the "For Sale" category. In the upper right hand corner, select "Post". Then make a category selection for your item. If you're not sure where your item belongs, visit the Craigslist categories and read other posts to find similar listings to your item. Do not cross-list your item in more than one category.

  4. Step 4

Create your item posting. Give it a title, a price, your location, and a reply-to email. If you select anonymize, Craigslist will hide your real email address from view. People will only see it if you reply to their emails. In order to make the most money and sales, select an appropriate price. Google the current value of your item, and select an appropriate price that reflects the value, condition, and new price of your item. You'll sell the most and make the most money if your items are competitively priced.

  5. Step 5
    Craigslist Post Description

In your Craigslist posting description, describe your item. Give details about the item that may not be visible in the photo - color, size, make, model, year, condition, etc. Add any additional details about you as a seller (cash only, must pick up, available on weekends, etc). Be succinct and clear, and check for spelling errors.

  6. Step 6
    Add Pictures to Craigslist Post
    Add Pictures to Craigslist Post

To add images to your Craigslist posting, click the "Add / Edit images" button. Here you can browse and upload pictures of your item from your computer. This is extremely important because buyers want to see pictures of what they're purchasing.

  7. Step 7

Submit your posting to Craigslist. You'll receive an email with a link that allows you to confirm your posting. Once you've done that, your posting will be added to Craigslist and you'll be ready to start receiving offers, selling your items, and making extra money.

Tips & Warnings
  • Postings will only be included on Craigslist for 7 days. If your item still hasn't sold after that time, make edits to the description, title, and price, and repost.
  • It's easy to make extra money if you keep your items in good condition and write compelling descriptions for them on Craigslist.
  • Only accept cash money. Never accept personal checks or credit cards for your items.
  • Try to meet in well-lit public places like Starbucks. If the item must be picked up from your home, only give your address to the confirmed buyer.
  • Avoid scams by selling locally.
