Step 1
Give your cat plenty of fresh water daily. Water keeps your cat’s body healthy and the urine in the cat litter won’t be so strong. If the cat doesn’t get enough to drink, it’s bad for him. Plus, his urine will be concentrated and your cat litter will smell much faster.
-
Step 2
Spray the cat litter box with disinfectant spray. Rinse the cat litter box. Let the cat litter box air dry. Then spray the cat litter box one more time with the disinfectant spray. Most cat litter boxes are plastic, which is horrible at absorbing odors.
-
Step 3
Pour a large amount of vanilla extract onto the center of a wet wash cloth. Wipe the entire inside and outside of the cat litter box with the extract. Allow to air dry for 15 minutes.
-
Step 4
Fill the bottom of the cat litter box with baking soda. Dump in the cat litter. This will get your cat litter box smelling fresh as it starts out each time.
-
Step 5
Remove wet litter and cat feces from the cat litter on a daily basis. The odor in the cat litter box can’t build up as much if you don’t have the culprit of the odors in the box.
-
Step 6
Change the cat litter at least every 3 days. Don’t just scoop and add more cat litter to the box. Bacteria can build up in the cat litter and give your cat infections. Even with scoopable litter, it must be replaced or you cat can get sick. Ideally, you should change the cat litter every other day.
-
Step 7
Really clean the box well at least once a week as described in this how-to. The cleaner you keep the cat litter box, the healthier your cat and the cat litter odor won’t drive you nuts.
