Things You'll Need:
- soft wash cloth baby soap water tub
-
Step 1
Start by deciding where you're going to wash your newborn. Newborns can only be sponge bathed for the first few weeks, so choose a place where that is possible...no sinks or tubs. Try a bowl of warm NOT HOT plain water you can dip a washcloth in.
-
Step 2
After you undress your baby, dip the washcloth in the water and wring it out. Use water only to wipe the baby's face. You can clean their eyes by starting at the inner corner and moving outward. Be sure to use a different part of the towel for each section of the face (forehead, nose/mouth, cheeks, eyes).
-
Step 3
After you have wiped the babies face, add some mild baby soap to the water in the bowl. Johnson and Johnson or baby magic work well, and smell great! Just add a small amount of soap to the water and swish it around a little bit with the washcloth. Use the soapy water to clean the rest of the baby's body. Dip the wash cloth in the water, wring out and wipe the baby's neck, chest, arms, back, behind, legs, and around the private areas. Do not simply get the washcloth wet and pour water over the baby. It will be important to keep the umbilical cord dry until it falls off. Do not scrub or rub the baby's skin too hard. Their skin is delicate. Be sure to get any soapy suds off the baby. Dry the baby's skin with a soft towel and apply baby lotion to the body DO NOT APPLY LOTION TO THE BABY'S HANDS AND FACE. Get your little angel dressed and wash your hands. If you wash the baby's hair, make sure you dry the scalp. This is especially important if the weather is chilly.
