Split pea soup is a fall favorite! No need to buy cans of soup!! This is an easy to make recipe that you will love!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Ingredients:

    1 bag of split peas
    4 -6 oz thick ham pieces or 1/4 pound salt pork - diced
    olive oil
    1 onion diced
    1 garlic clove - minced
    4-5 carrots- diced
    6-8 cups water
    1 package of chicken bouillon
    salt & pepper

  2. Step 2
     

    In the pot that you will be making your soup in, place your ham, onion and garlic with some olive oil and cook until the ham is getting browned and the onion is soft. This is your flavoring - the oils from the ham fat are incredible.

  3. Step 3
     

    Now, add your water and packet of chicken bouillon. Stir together. Let the water heat until it is steaming. Add your bag of split peas as well as your diced carrots. Add some salt. Bring to boil. Once the water is boiling, turn the heat down to a simmer and cover. Cook for about 45 minutes. Now, take a potato masher and mash your split peas. Some of the peas with still be too hard to mash. Stir and cover the soup. Cook for another 20 minutes covered. Mash one last time. Stir.

  4. Step 4
     

    Now you are ready to enjoy! Toast up some bread. Butter the bread and cut into large squares to use a croutons. Serve with a nice salad. See what you created!! No cans needed!
