Things You'll Need:
- stiff black felt
- or back construction paper
- glue or needle and thread
- a Mickey Mouse sticker (opt)
-
Step 1
To make a beanie, start with a piece of black felt.
Cut the felt into a circle that will fit over the top of the wearers head. Use a dinner plate or other round object as a simple pattern. -
Step 2
Cut a straight line from outer edge to the exact center of the circle. To find the center, fold the circle in half and them in half again, or quartered. The center will be the tip of the inside fold. Mark this spot with a pin.
-
Step 3
Cross the cut edge to form a cone. Adjust the material until it fits the wearers head. Stitch or glue the overlapping cloth in place. Turn the piece inside out to have a less sharp point on the top.
-
Step 4
Cut two round circles of stiff black felt, thin plastic, or cardboard using a disposable 7 inch dessert plate for a pattern.
With the glued seam in the back of the beanie, cut a 3 inch slit , 2 inches from either side of the beanie point. -
Step 5
If you are using felt, make an inch pleat or ½ in fold on the ear for strength. Put a drop of glue at the fold. Tuck the ear with the fold at the center, into the slit on the beanie. On the inside, stitch or glue the ear on both sides to keep it in place. If you are using construction paper, or cardboard desert plates, glue the circle on the inside of the slit. Fold the edge inside the slit so a flat edge will rest comfortably on your head. Place a line of glue on the outside of the slit where the ear was inserted to keep it in place.
-
Step 6
The cut Mickey Mouse ears can also be folded a ¼ inch to create a lip and glued flat on even sides of a plastic head band. Cardboard or plastic will stand up straight, but a felt circles will need to be folded in the middle of where the ear will be glued. Fabric stiffener can be purchased at a craft or sewing store as well.
-
Step 7
To complete the costume as Mickey Mouse. Wear short pants and a suit jacket or bolero. A large bow tie will complete the look.
-
Step 8
If you are wanting to look like a 1950's Mousekateer, wear jeans for a boy or a pleated shirt for a girl and a light grey sweatshirt with your ears. Make sure to call yourself Annette or Bobby.
