Catfish sometimes called Channel Cats are identified by their long cat like whiskers called barbels.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Find Catfish farm raised around the world. In the USA most are farmed in Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana.
    Catch Wild Catfish in rivers, lakes and ponds.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase Farm raised Catfish that are mild and sweet tasting due to their controlled diet of grains vitamins and minerals.
    Avoid Wild Catfish they can taste muddy or oily.
    purchase Catfish that have firm flesh with a fine flake.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase Catfish that are white or light pink, avoid any with grey, brown or yellow coloring.
    Purchase Catfish whole or in filets. Whole fish usually weigh 1-2 lbs and filets 5-12oz

  4. Step 4

    COOKING METHODS FOR CATFISH:
    Deep fried is very popular just dip seasoned filets in beaten egg and then cornmeal and deep fry until crisp.
    Serve with hush puppies and tartare sauce.
    Whole Catfish can also be deep fried, put a few gashes across the skin before breading.

  5. Step 5

    COOKING METHODS FOR CATFISH:
    Broiling Catfish is a low fat delicious method of cooking.
    Place filets on a broiler pan and season with lemon juice and Cajun seasoning.
    Broil 4-5 minutes each side. Serve with fresh green beans and rice pilaff,

    COOKING METHODS FOR CATFISH:
    Bake the Catfish in a shallow dish topped with your favorite tomato sauce , green peppers, red onions, garlic and a few capers.
    Bake at 400 degrees approximately 20 minutes.
    Serve with garlic smashed potatoes and fried okra.

Tips & Warnings
  • Frozen Catfish are a good substitute for fresh.
