How to Manage a Urinary Tract Infection

If you have been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection by your doctor, it is very important that you follow all of his directions and take all medicines prescribed to you as described by your doctor. In addition, you can take extra measures by drinking cranberry or blueberry juice, as these juices flush toxins out of the bladder naturally.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your doctor if you suspect you have a urinary tract infection (UTI).

    • 2

Take pills (usually antibiotics) as prescribed by your doctor.

    • 3

Drink plenty of fluids during the time of your infection, especially cranberry or blueberry juice. Drinking will help you clear the bacteria and keep you hydrated, especially if you have a fever.

    • 4

Start practicing good hygiene. Always keep your genitals dry and wear cotton, breathable underwear. Women should wipe from front to back after urinating, and both men and women should wipe from front to back after defecation. Avoid bubble baths and urinate after sex. Men should keep the area under their foreskins clean.

    • 5

Follow up with your doctor if your symptoms get worse or do not change after your course of antibiotics. Sometimes a stronger dose or intravenous antibiotics is necessary.
