How to Make a Sewing Station From an Armoire

Armoires can be used to create unique spaces. Typically used to store clothes, armoires can be manipulated to create an attractive sewing space. Uninstall the doors and any innards of the armoire and you have the beginnings of a sewing desk. If the armoire has a built-in shelf, use colorful baskets to store your sewing supplies and material. Browse your local antique shop or flea market for inexpensive armoires.

Take out the clothing rod that runs the length of the inside of the armoire. Shelving located at the top of the armoire can be kept to use for storing your sewing supplies and material.

Using a drill or screwdriver, remove the screws from the armoire doors by unscrewing the screws from the hinge of each door. Be sure to hold the doors during the unmounting process so they don't accidentally fall down.

Using a saw, cut a hole in the back of the armoire to run the power cord attached to the sewing machine out of the armoire and into an electrical outlet. Depending upon the proximity of the outlet, you'll most likely need a power strip equipped with a ground switch that will flip if there is a power outage. This will protect the sewing machine from damage.

Line the inside of the armoire with colorful fabric. This will add a creative touch to your new sewing desk. Using a staple gun, attach the fabric to the inside of the armoire.

Anchor the top of the armoire to the wall using L brackets, because a sewing machine vibrates a great deal while in use. Attach the brackets to the top of the armoire. Insert the screws into the holes in the bracket and gently screw into place. Make sure they are tightly fastened.

Install a shelf for the sewing machine. Use two L shaped brackets on either side of the inside of the armoire. Using a screwdriver and screws, mount the brackets to the armoire. Next, place the shelf on top of the L brackets for the perfect spot for your sewing machine.

Put colorful baskets into your armoire to store fabric, thread and other sewing supplies. Plug in the machine and you're ready for new projects.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Instead of lining the inside with fabric, you can paint it a bright color. Use one coat of primer followed by two to three coats of paint. Allow to dry at least 24 hours.

    • Make sure the armoire is securely fastened or anchored to the wall to prevent it from moving or tipping over.
