LED flashlights offer soft, bright light without the warming properties of traditional incandescent bulb flashlights. LED flashlights are now readily available in sporting goods stores and retail stores. Many people choose to discard their old flashlights for the long-lasting light of the LED flashlights, but that is not the most cost-effective choice. Instead, you can purchase LED bulbs and learn how to transform your existing flashlights with an upgraded LED bulb.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • LED bulb
  • Nippers
  1. Step 1

Purchase an LED bulb, either online or from a local sporting goods or retail store, which matches the size of your flashlight. LED bulbs come in different sizes and colors, including white, ultraviolet and red.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the head of the flashlight and set aside.

  3. Step 3

Remove the incandescent bulb by gently grasping the bulb and pulling it straight out.

  4. Step 4

Set the new LED bulb next to the removed incandescent bulb and trim the leads on the LED bulb with nippers to match the length of the incandescent bulb leads. The length may vary for different flashlights, so make sure you compare each incandescent bulb you replace to the new LED bulb before trimming the leads.

  5. Step 5

Insert the LED bulb into the flashlight bulb socket. You may need to adjust the width of the leads by pinching them closer together with your fingers, but make sure that the leads are not touching when you insert the bulb into the socket.

  6. Step 6

Turn the flashlight on to see if the bulb illuminates. If it does not, remove the LED bulb, spin it 180 degrees and re-insert the bulb into the flashlight.

  7. Step 7

Replace the head of the flashlight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Save the incandescent bulb you are replacing and put it in a safe place in case you want to convert your flashlight back at a later date.
  • Converting your flashlight to use an LED bulb may void the warranty on the flashlight. However, some companies are now selling LED bulbs to fit their older incandescent models that do not void the original warranty.
