For your color choices, Barbara Lewis, interior designer and former in-house designer and showroom manager for Duralee Fabrics, suggests you look at the fabrics and accent colors in your furniture, then look out the window. "You need to bring the outside in. There are multitudes of colors for you to choose from."
Green is the most restful of any color. It's mid-spectrum and works with almost any color scheme. Watch out for using pastels, though, as there are really none in nature. Trees and wildflowers all have vibrant colors. Even the colors of the sea and sky, while light, are still strong enough to make a statement. When you choose your color, use mat paint, not glossy. This helps the color blend into the background better.

Balance of color is key when painting a room. You don't want to have an equal amount of each color, as that would overwhelm you. The design law of chromatic distribution tells us that neutral, calmer tones should be used on the walls and ceiling, your largest area painted. As you reduce the area in size to be painted, the intensity of color can be heightened, like in a bathroom or a study. Bright colors are used in small accents placed around the room, like recessed shelves or on a single wall.

Make sure your color choices make sense when walking through the house. You want one room to lead into the other and visually match. The colors should meld when looking through your door to the next room, even if it's a different color, but the same value.

Tips & Warnings

  • Whatever colors you choose, your home should remind you of the natural world around you. With color choices ranging from blueberry to bark brown to sunflower, your rustic dwelling will be anything but bland.
