Measure the windows you need curtains for before you go shopping, so you know
which type and size to get. Make precise measurements of how large the windows are, how far they are from floors and ceilings and how far out your curtain rod will go.The type of curtain you want will require a specific measurement; curtains with tabs will hang directly from the curtain rod, whereas ruffled curtains will have fabric above the rod as well.
There are also different lengths of curtains. Some will come to the windowsill, and others can be bought to drape to the floor. Measure all distances carefully to avoid excess or too little fabric.

2
Take note of the color scheme and layout of your room. Choosing the best curtains will require that you find ones that complement the colors of the walls and style of furniture in the room.
Buy curtains that will neither overwhelm nor understate your style or cause problems with the room design; floor-length drapes in a room with antique furniture will make the room complete, whereas the same curtains in a child's room will mostly be a tripping hazard.

Decide what style of curtain will best complement the design and function of your room. Have a specific idea in mind for what sort of overall effect you want the curtains to have.
There are catalogs of styles from which to choose; Venetian blinds are excellent for rooms where controlling light levels is important, whereas dark, sill-length drapes might be preferred in a room where privacy is desired.

Shop around. Browsing through curtain selections at websites can give you an idea of what curtains are available, but there are no substitutes for physically handling them before buying.
