How to Make a Bowstring Board

Bowstring jigs or boards are tools for building strand bowstrings. The jig is a pattern for the bowstring and also sets up a work area for your bowstrings. Commercially built bowstring jigs are available, but you can build your own with just a few household items and an hour or so of time.

Things You'll Need

  • 2x4 lumber board, at least 7 feet long
  • Tape measure
  • Screws

      Cut the 2x4 board to 7 feet long. Measure and mark the center (lengthwise) of the board. Measure along either side of the center line and mark the board at one-inch intervals.

      Put a screw in one side of the 2x4 on the mark for half the length that you want your finished string to be. Repeat the process on the opposite side.

      Use the bowstring board by wrapping the bowstring around the two screws until you get the desired thickness of string. Unscrew one of the screws to remove the string. Adjust the length of the string by moving the screws farther away from or closer to the center line.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the manufacturer's recommendations when determining the thickness of your string, as this will prevent breakage and injury.
