How to Build a Working Model Volcano Out of Styrofoam

In ancient Roman times, volcanoes were thought to be spewing the excess materials from the forge of Vulcan, the blacksmith god who created Zeus' lightning bolts. Now, of course, scientists understand volcanoes are the result of geological forces and tectonic movements.

The forces that cause an eruption are complex and occur deep below the Earth's surface. But simulating a volcano is simple, and only a few basic materials will be required.

Things You'll Need

  • Styrofoam cup (12 oz.)
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard
  • Plastic wrap
  • Glue
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 3 drops detergent
  • 5 drops orange food coloring (optional)
  • 1 tbsp. baking soda
  • Tissue

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the bottom of the Styrofoam cup with scissors.

    • 2

Wrap the cardboard with plastic wrap. Glue the cup to the wrapped board, with the larger opening at the bottom. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 3

Pour the water and vinegar into the top of the volcano, and add the detergent and coloring.

    • 4

Put the baking soda into the tissue, drop the tissue in, and watch the volcano erupt.

Tips & Warnings

  • To make your volcano look more realistic, cover the cardboard and Styrofoam in Play-Doh.
