How to Make Wooden Dowels
Wooden dowels are a standard implement used in the conjoining of various surfaces in woodworking. If you are designing and building your own furniture or cabinets, or doing any kind of carpentry work that involves securely cleaving separate parts, it's often best to fashion your own dowels to fit each specific project. Things You'll Need
- Dowel-maker
- Steel clamps
- Slim, unfinished wooden square stock
- Power drill

Mount your dowel-maker on a work bench using standard steel work clamps.

Adjust the sizing plate on the dowel-maker to create dowels with a diameter that fits your specific project. Most dowel-makers range in diameter lengths from 1/4" to 1".

Insert the wooden square stock into the dowel-maker. The square stock should be only slightly larger than the desired dowel size.

Pass the stock through the machine using an electric drill, and cut to desired length.

Tips & Warnings
Dowel sizes should correspond with the size of your specific project. Large furniture requires wider, longer dowels, whereas smaller wooden boxes require slim, short dowels.
