What is referred to as "Singapore Math" is a phrase for the math curriculum that was designed by the Singapore Ministry of Education. The success of Singapore students on achievement tests performed by the International Study Center at Boston College earned the attention of educators and parents worldwide, especially in the United States. There are now different editions of Singapore Math, with one version that is a US edition. In these workbooks, names and phrases were changed to more American-sounding ones, and US measurements were added. With a little study and preparation, educators and many parents can successfully teach it.

Things You'll Need:

  • A school year of Singapore consists at a minimum of two textbooks and two workbooks. For example, in 4th grade, you would purchase 4A Textbook and Workbook and also 4B Textbook and Workbook. For students needing more practice, there are also Extra Practice workbooks for each grade with an answer key in the back. There are also Teacher's Guides and Home Instructor's Guides available that contain the answers to the textbook and workbook problems. Some other items that may be needed are measuring instruments, counting manipulatives and index cards with various facts on them.

    Review and Prep

  1. Step 1

Review the pages in the textbook that will be covered. Gather any materials needed, and practice how the information will be presented. If you have one of the guides, additional suggestions are given for instruction. Work the practice problems and examples with the student(s).

  2. Step 2

Assign the exercise listed in the textbook for that lesson. The student should be able to do the workbook exercise with some help if necessary. If there were not enough exercises in the workbook, the textbook contains extra practice sets as well.

  3. Step 3

If the instructor had decided to use the Extra Practice workbook, then problems should be assigned. These can be done as part of the lesson or done the next day as a review to see how well the material was absorbed. A teacher using this in a classroom might send it home with the student as homework.

Tips & Warnings
  • Singapore math books at preset intervals have a Review section for concepts from prior lessons. These reviews can be just practice to help in retaining the information or as a test. If you are not sure which grade level to use with your student, the Singapore Math Web site provides free placement tests that can be downloaded and used. Answer keys are included as well as suggestions for interpreting the test scores.
