If you decide to have a security system installed, it likely carried a large price tag. Security systems typically include a control panel, smoke detectors, a hard-wired door, hard-wired windows, sensors, motion detectors and more depending on the security package you selected. Once you have a security system in place, you'll want to inspect the devices to ensure your property is protected.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Security System
  1. Step 1

Alert your security system's monitoring service that will be testing the equipment. This is essential because testing and inspection will trip alarms, prompting the security system provider to notify authorities.

  2. Step 2

Use the control panel to set the alarm system. This should arm all of your home's entry ways.

  3. Step 3

Perform a systematic check of each of the home's entrances. Open all doors and windows while the system is armed to make sure the alarm is tripped. Between each door and window, you'll need to re-enter your security code to stop the alarm.

  4. Step 4

Review all detectors. Each detector should be powered on and have a green indicator light. No light or a different colored light indicates a potential problem and your provider should be notified.

  5. Step 5

Learn how to operate the different features of the system. Your security system company should leave you a manual that details the different steps to enable and disable different components.

  6. Step 6

Let the security system company know when you are finished inspecting the security system so it can re-activate monitoring.
