How to Plumb Bob on Golf Greens

Some golfers use plumb bobbing as a technique to line up putts. Golfers use a vertically hanging putter aligned with ball and hole to examine the break in the green. In most cases, the read the golfer gets from plumb bobbing is far from exact and is instead intended to get a general feeling for the break, or to confirm a feeling the golfer already had.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a spot so the ball is directly between you and the hole. You can also position yourself for a reverse plumb bob by going to the opposite side, so the hole is directly between you and the ball.

    • 2

Position yourself about 10 feet behind the ball; the exact distance is inconsequential. Squat or kneel down so your angle of view is lower to the ground, effectively bringing the ball and hole closer together along the vertical asymptote.

    • 3

Hold your putter out in front of your face at arm's length, gripping it between two or three fingers by the end of the handle and allowing it to hang as freely as possible so it dangles straight down.

    • 4

Point the toe of the putter away from yourself so that the shaft appears to hang straight down; the uneven weighting of the clubhead will cause the shaft to appear tilted if the toe is pointed to the side.

    • 5

Adjust the position of the putter and your head so the putter-shaft line passes through the ball and the hole. This creates a vertical counterpoint against which you can evaluate the slope of the green and get a feel for the break of the putt you are about to play.
