Wall fountains bring serenity along with the peaceful sounds of flowing water to your outdoor living area. You can build a slate outdoor wall fountain with minimum building skills that you can attach to an existing fence or the outside wall of your home or garage. This contemporary design is simple to build and will bring hours of enjoyment for your family and friends.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sheet of marine plywood, ¾-inch thick
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Exterior stain and wood sealer
  • Rectangular concrete planter
  • Concrete seal
  • Plumber's putty
  • Fountain pump & plastic tubing
  • Slate tiles, 3/8 inch thick
  • Tile cutter
  • Waterproof adhesive
  • Furring strips
  • Decking screws and screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Measure and cut the plywood to fit the desired dimensions of your wall fountain. If you'd prefer not to cut too many of the slate tiles, adjust the dimensions so that you can fit rows of full-sized tiles both horizontally and vertically on one side of your plywood. You will still need to cut out an opening for the plastic tubing, but at least the tiles will fit easily.

  2. Step 2

Drill a hole in the center of the plywood where you plan to insert the tubing. Position the hole so that you can nip off one corner of four connecting tiles rather than to cut a circle in one tile. To make the most of your fountain design, position the water flow vertically between the center and the top of the plywood.

  3. Step 3

Attach furring strips to the back of the plywood so you can hang the fountain on a wall and still have room for the tubing. Leave a space in the center so you can run the plastic tubing between the furring strips.

  4. Step 4

Apply exterior stain to the front, edges and back of the plywood to match the color of the slate. Let the stain dry, and apply wood sealer. Let the sealer dry.

  5. Step 5

Glue the slate tiles to the face of your plywood with waterproof adhesive. Cut the tile or tiles to fit around the opening before you attach them to the plywood. Let the adhesive dry.

  6. Step 6

Apply concrete seal to the planter and position it wherever you plan to place your outdoor wall fountain. If the planter has drainage holes, seal them with plumber's putty. Let the putty and sealer dry.

  7. Step 7

Attach the plastic tubing to the opening on the back of your fountain with plumber's putty or waterproof adhesive. Your goal is to seal around the tubing as well as to hold it in place.

  8. Step 8

Hang the fountain above the concrete planter. Connect the plastic tubing to the fountain pump, and insert the pump into the concrete planter. Fill the planter with water, and turn on the pump.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider staining the concrete to coordinate with the slate water fountain before you apply the concrete seal. Add stones inside the concrete planter for added decoration.
