How to Add Thread Crochet to Clothing

Crochet embellishments can add interest and spunk to any outfit. Additionally, crochet can be a useful way to cover up holes or stains in older garments or to modernize the look of an outdated item. Use thread crochet instead of throwing away your old clothing items, and you'll have a new wardrobe with very little expense.

Instructions

Add a neckline. You can update the neckline of an old t-shirt or other top using thread crochet. Start by cutting the top into a scoop-neck style (or another shape if you prefer and feel comfortable). Then use your crochet thread and a large-eyed needle to stitch a blanket stitch around the neckline (fold down the edge of the neckline first for a more polished look). Fasten off, and get out your crochet hook; start with a row of sc into the stitching, and then go from there to build a lacy design of your choosing.

Hide a mistake. Crochet flowers, circles, squares, or any other motif shape you prefer. Then use a needle and thread to sew them onto a top or pair of pants; cover a stain on the front of a t-shirt to wear it again and again, or use it to patch up a hole in your pants. This method is more colorful and modern than a traditional patch, and you'll feel like you have a whole new outfit.

Add a hemline. You can add a hem to a skirt or top using thread crochet. Start by creating a blanket stitch around the existing hem, like with the neckline instructions above. Then continue on by making shells or other stitch patterns around the bottom of the garment until the desired length is reached.

Add length to pants. Use the hemline method above to add a length of cuff to the bottom of a pair of pants; you can cut them off first to be capri-length first or leave them as they are. This is especially great if a pair of pants is becoming a little bit too short; you can add length to the hemline with a cuff instead of buying a new pair of longer pants.

Update your jeans. Add crochet embellished flowers or spirals to back pockets for a modern look, or stitch a length of crochet down the side hemlines. You can use a needle and thread to attach your embellishments to your jeans, and you can turn a plain Jane pair into a fancy and expensive look without buying new jeans.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get creative. You can embellish any garment with crochet, including dresses or accessories.

  • If you don't like the way something looks, don't be afraid to rip it off and start over.
