Puffy eyes aren't the greatest sight first thing in the morning. But they happen, caused by factors both in and out of your control. For some people, puffy eyes are hereditary. For others, water retention, seasonal allergies and lack of sleep cause the swollen eyes staring back in the mirror. While you can't do anything about your genes, you can take steps to reduced the puffiness each morning and to prevent it in the first place.

        To reduce eye puffiness in the morning, place a cold compress over you eyes. If you don't have a compress, use a washcloth soaked in cold water or cucumber slices.

        Dip two used tea bags into cold water, or chill them in the refrigerator, and put them on your eyes.

        Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to flush our your system. This will carry away the water puffing up your eyes as well. Drink plenty of water all day to prevent retention under your eyes and throughout your body.

        To prevent puffy eyes, sleep with your head slightly elevated so that water does not pool under your eyes. Get plenty of sleep each night, about seven to nine hours, according to the Sleep Foundation.

        If your eye puffiness is caused by seasonal allergies, treat the allergies with over-the-counter medications, or talk to your doctor about a prescription.

        Remove your eye makeup before going to bed to prevent irritation and swelling.
