Step 1
Determine if you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for PMI PMP certification. With a college degree you need at least 4500 hours of experience leading and directing project activities. Without a college degree, you need 7500 hours of experience.

Step 2
Become a PMI member. With the Membership you get the current version of PMBOK. This is the main book for taking the PMI PMP certification exam.

Step 3
Fill in the online application form and document your relevant experience. Online application is available in PMI website [see resources below].

Step 4
Take PMI PMP certification training from a training institute/university recognized by PMI. Upon passing the course, you should get minimum 35 PDUs required to apply for the certification exam.

Step 5
Submit the completed application and apply for the PMP examination through PMI website. The exam fee is $405.00 for PMI members and $555.00 for non members.

Step 6
Wait for the application approval. There may be application audits. If you are audited you have to submit additional information requested by PMI, before taking the PMI PMP certification exam.

Step 7
Schedule the exam upon the application approval. You have one year period to schedule and take the exam after the application is approved. PMI PMP certification exams are administered by Prometric.

Step 8
Once you pass the PMI PMP certification exam, you become a PMP.
