Clipping a horse's ears can give him a groomed and elegant look. But clipping the inside of the ear can rob the horse of an important insect defense. Clip your horse's ear the natural way:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brush
  • Horse clipper
  1. Step 1

Clean your horse's ear (see my article 'How to clean your horse's ears' and brush the hair from the inside out with a soft brush.

  2. Step 2

Prepare your clipper. Be sure your clipper is oiled and the blades are sharp in order to avoid painful pulling of hairs. Start by holding one of your horse's ears in one hand, the clipper in the other. Gently press the ear together, so that the edges meet (see image).

  3. Step 3

Start clipping all hair that protrudes over the edges from the bottom up. Repeat several times until the edges look neat and even. When done, brush any hair out of the horse's ear.
Your horse's ear should now look neatly trimmed and still maintain enough hair inside his ear to provide important insect protection.

Tips & Warnings
  • A small clipper is more suitable for this type of clipping.
  • Set the clipping length of your blade to 'medium'.
  • Do not try to force this procedure on your horse. If your horse is not used to having his ears clipped, take you time getting him used to the clipper noise next to his ear for a few days, before you start trimming.
