How to Celebrate Grandparents' Day as a Homeschool Family

When I announced my plans to homeschool my children, family members were disappointed about missing events like Christmas pageants, Valentine’s Day parties and Grandparents’ Day celebrations. Rather than bring on the headache of trying to coordinate with many other homeschool families (what a scheduling nightmare!), I decided to have our own simple Grandparents’ Day celebration at our home. Here’s how you can have one, too:

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blank paper
  • An array of your child’s artwork and schoolwork
  • Food
  • Drinks
  • Plates, cups, silverware, napkins
  1. Step 1

Pick a date and have the kids make the invitation, taking into consideration whether or not the grandparents work or are retired. The date doesn’t have to be in September; if the grandparents live too far away, consider having the event when they will be in town (e.g., Thanksgiving or another holiday).

  2. Step 2

Have a simple lunch served by the kids.

  3. Step 3

Keep it to 2 hours, and be prepared to answer questions about things your kids have been learning.

  4. Step 4

Show off projects, workbooks, worksheets, etc.

  5. Step 5

Make a slideshow of pictures taken throughout the year so far (probably only a few weeks) of field trips, working hard, playing with friends, etc.

Tips & Warnings
  • If grandparents can’t come, e-mail them your slideshow so they can see what the kids have been doing so far during the school year.
