Many people use sinus irrigation to get nasal allergy relief. This ancient yoga technique from India uses salt water to flush excess mucus from nasal cavities. This safe and proven method has been shown to not only relieve sinus pressure caused by nasal allergies, but to also help prevent allergens from sticking in the nose. Here is how sinus irrigation works.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • neti pot
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1 cup room temperature distilled water
  • 1/2 t. baking soda
  1. Step 1

Mix together the salt, baking soda and water in a cup. Clean out the neti pot with additional distilled water. Pour the contents of the cup into your neti pot.

  2. Step 2

Stand over a sink and turn your head to the side. Breathe out of your mouth only. Insert the spout for the neti pot into the upper region of your nostril. Hold your head still.

  3. Step 3

Gently pour the salt water into your nasal cavity allowing it to exit out the opposite nostril. Allow gravity to control the flow of the water. Stay calm as sinus irrigation can be overwhelming at first.

  4. Step 4

Continue this process as much as needed to get nasal allergy relief. Repeat the same steps in the other nostril. Thoroughly clean your neti pot with hot distilled water after each use. Dry with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay calm! Nasal irrigation can cause anxiety.
  • Make sure your neti pot has a spout small enough to fit your nasal cavity.
  • Do NOT heat the water as your nasal passages are sensitive!
  • Measure the ingredients carefully.
  • Do not breathe through your nose else you may begin to choke.
