The news is out. Ellen DeGeneres is the new judge on American Idol. Replacing the sweetheart of the show, Paula Abdul, was not going to be any small task. C’mon, she was forever our girl! Gone will be the remarks about how beautiful the singers are (when there’s no other good comment to give), the constant flirting with Simon, and the babbling, slurring, sometimes incoherent feedback that only Paula can offer. Nope, it’s time for a changing of the guard and better fresh air than Kara was to bring to the show. It’s time to get excited about Ellen DeGeneres as a judge on American Idol.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Hahahahahahahaha. LOL.

    Hahahahahahahaha. LOL.

Laugh yourself silly. Have you seen her stand-up routines? How about her daytime talk show? Watch this woman and just try not to laugh. It’s hard to do. Now think about American Idol. Have you ever watched it and just wished for a moment there was a commentator to express the right punch line for the performance you just watched? That is Ellen’s niche. American Idol is downright amusing, especially at the beginning, and there are few out there who will be able to tactfully poke fun at the singers like Ellen can.

  2. Step 2
It's as though you're the fourth judge!

It's as though you're the fourth judge!

Live vicariously through Ellen. With Ellen judging American Idol, it’s the next best thing to being there yourself. She, like most of America, knows what she likes and what she doesn’t. She hasn’t worked for years behinds the scenes in the music industry, hasn’t written or sang any number one hits. She’s just your average Jane Q. Public who knows what music will get her up on her feet to break out in a dance. Isn’t that what you feel when you hear a new artist? Since you can’t be there to judge, think of Ellen as the “people’s judge”. Ellen by proxy, if you will.

  3. Step 3
    Breathe it in.

    Breathe it in.

Breathe in that fresh air. Last season, it was thought that bringing a fourth judge to American Idol was going to bring in a little bit of fresh air to the show—spice it up and give us another viewpoint. Enter songwriter Kara DioGuardi. Kara did bring with her the musical background knowledge, and she proved in a diva-like singing match with Bikini Girl that she had serious pipes, but as a judge, it was just more of the same. Not being drastically different from Randy or Simon, and certainly not as sweet as Paula, it did nothing more than add length to the show, causing stress to many a DVR. Ellen is a delight. She won’t bring with her a music background, but she will bring a completely different set of new eyes and her own non-music executive mindset. It may be just what we all need; breathe in a new season of change.
